At the end of Part I, Montag has just watched the horrifying death of a woman who chooses to burn herself up with her book collection. Captain Beatty visits Montag at home and tries calm Montag's alarm by telling him how the reactions books cause. According to Beatty, book cause unhappiness and people wanted to be happy. Their solution was to burn the books. But when Beatty leaves, Montag confesses to his wife that he has been secretly taking books from fires and hiding them in his house. He knows it is wrong, but he begins reading the books to see what is in them that would cause such diverse reactions.
