The prisoners’ recitation of The Kaddish as they walk through Auschwitz conveys the theme of the struggle to maintain faith because it shows that they are trying to hang on the little faith that they have left. It reminds them of the life they used to have, A life where they were not despised because of their religion. The death around them is testing their faith in an extreme way. They are said to be God’s chosen people, yet he seems to remain silent during all of their suffering. How can they have faith in him when he doesn’t appear to help them in the time that they need him the most?
