Or, in Chapter 4 of "Lord of the Flies," Jack smears clay ("dazzle paint") on his face, then black, then he changes the colors making a savage mask. Another metaphor exists in Chapter 5 as Ralph walks down a narrow path and "finds himself understanding the wearisomeness of this life where every path was an improvisation and...one's waking life was spent watching one's feet."
