You may be referring to the secret call that the boys use in order to attract each other's attention at night so they could sneak out of the house and go play together at night. The boys make the sound of a cat's meow in order to attract each other's attention but not tip off their parents. If one of the parents heard a cat meowing at night, they might be annoyed, but they wouldn't think to go check on their children. The boys meow to each other and then climb out of their windows and sneak out to play.
