The main themes of the novel all center around the choices and the consequences of the choices Okonkwo is forced to make during the novel. Since he is almost incapable of change, the White man's invasion of his territory is very destructive to Okonkwo. He cannot adapt to changes in customs or traditions or deal with the culture clash that occurs, especially towards the end of the novel. Thus, "things fall apart" for the main character as he fails to deal with the transformation of his society.

Scout is puzzled by Miss Gates' disapproval toward Hitler because of Miss Gates’ outspoken prejudices against Tom Robinson. In chapter twenty-six, Miss Gates tries to explain the reason that Hitler persecutes the Jews:

‘That’s the difference between America and Germany. We are a democracy and Germany is a dictatorship. Dictator-ship,’ she said. ‘Over here we don’t believe in persecuting anybody. Persecution comes from people who are prejudiced. Pre-ju-dice,’ she enunciated carefully. ‘There are no better people in the world that the Jews, and why Hitler doesn’t think so is a mystery to me.’

Miss Gates statement above puzzles Scout because, during the Tom Robinson’s trial, she saw how prejudice people were in Maycomb; she saw this with the conviction of Tom Robinson. Napolean believes that an emphasis on the young should be the focus of education. This is first exemplified in Chapter III when he takes nine young puppies from their mother's care in order to train them. They later come back as Napoleon's enforcers and play a large role in Napoleon's grab for power against Snowball. Snowball, on the other hand, would prefer to focus on all the animals. He wants to organize the animals into committees and teach all of them to read. This parallels the fight between Stalin and Trotsky after the death of Lenin and the Russian Revolution. Eventually, Trotsky was forced into exile by Stalin and then later assassinated. Like Trotsky, Snowball is chased off of Animal Farm by the dogs and Napoleon takes control of Animal Farm.

Doodle's personality emerges through the strength of his determination to live against all odds.  Although Doodle can only crawl backwards, which is how he gets the name Doodle, which is given to him by Brother.  He acquires the ability to walk to please Brother.  His real distinction, his gentle spirit is expressed, especially through his attention to the Scarlet Ibis.

"He is the first to notice the visiting ibis and honors the bird by giving it a careful burial while finding a way of respecting his mother's orders not to touch it. The fact that Doodle is the only member of the family to care for the scarlet ibis enough to bury it shows his compassionate heart and emphasizes a symbolic link between boy and bird."

There is also the element of "no way out." Since Rainsford was "stuck" on a relatively small island out in the middle of nowhere (somewhere in the Carribbean), he could run around in circles to escape Zaroff's clutches but never really escape. The jagged coral reefs which had ripped ships apart ("helped" by a fake lighthouse, too) also hemmed him in. Even so, where was he to he go? The remoteness of the island made it impossible to escape.

Also, the jungle environment lends itself well to the leit motif of survival of the fittest. In a purely Darwinist way, Rainsford matches both brawn and wits and wins over Zaroff. He sets various traps from his know-how gleaned through years of experience in big game hunting. Here, already, the roles are beginning to be exchanged.

It is interesting to note that Rainsford doubles back to confront Zaroff off guard "on his own turf." This castle is no humble abode but reeks with pure Gothic elements. There is a sharp contrast between luxury and violence, civilization and barbarism. For example, while Zaroff and his guest drink champagne, the walls around them display Zaroff's trophies, the decapitated heads of big game animals he has hunted on various continents. With a madman such as Zaroff, who knows? Perhaps Rainsford's head (and I had this gruesome thought when reading the first time) might be next....

In all these ways the setting lends itself well to the suspense (and mood) of the story.

Although Aunt Alexandra does come across as insensitive and harsh, she does truly care about Scout; however, Scout does not really realize how her aunt feels until nearly the end of the story. Aunt Alexandra often seems to be overly concerned with Scout's lack of ladylike qualities and makes her opinions known to all of those who will listen. Eventually, though, Aunt Alexandra's actions and words do reveal her love for her brother and his children.
