Falynmarie is right that you would often want to change one of the equations to positive or negative by multiplying both sides by -1. However, with this one, I think you are fine as you are.
-4x - 2y = -12
4x + 8y = -24
______________
0 + 6y = -36
or 6y = -36
Then divide both sides by 6 to isolate the y:
6y = -36
y = -6
Now substitute the -6 to find x:
-4x - 2 (-6) = -12
-4x - (-12) = -12
-4x + 12 = -12
Subtract 12 from both sides:
-4x = -24
x = 6
Let's try it with the other equation too:
4x + 8 (-6) = -24
4x - 48 = -24
add 48 to both sides:
4x = 24
x = 6
So, the end result is that x = 6 and y = -6
